Many women get surgery on their breasts. Whether the surgery is for medical reasons or is for cosmetic reasons, the surgery should be taken seriously. A breast implant surgery, or a breast reconstructive surgery is a major procedure and will take a good amount of healing. Here are some things you should do to prepare yourself for the surgery.

1. Prep Your House

One of the most important things is prepping your house so that you can be comfortable after the surgery. For example, sleep can be very uncomfortable following the surgery. You may not be able to comfortably sleep on your side, and you surely can't sleep on your stomach. But sleep will play an important role in your recovery, so you need to prepare your house for your sleeping. Many women find that using a recliner rocking chair is one of the best ways to sleep. You can prop yourself with pillows, so that it will allow you to sleep on your back in a comfortable position so that there is no pressure on your breasts. This is not something that you want to buy or move around after the surgery. So think ahead of time and get the proper sleeping and lounging arrangements. This also applies to meal prep, medications, entertainment, and so forth.

2. Prep Your Mind

Although the breast surgery is a physical surgery, it can really do terrible things to your mind. You are changing your body in a way that can affect your identity and view of yourself. Before you get the surgery, especially if is elective, you need to be sure that you are emotionally ready to handle the changes. You may want to meet with a counselor or therapist or talk to close family or friends about it. On top of the physical healing, you should expect to experience a wide range of emotions with your new body.

3. Don't Expect Immediate Results

Breast surgery is a major surgery. This means that it won't look the way it is suppose to for a couple weeks following the surgery. Avoid the desire to look in the mirror immediately following the surgery. There will be a lot of swelling and bruising and it can feel discouraging to see your body this way. Instead, check only for infection and follow the doctor's instructions on care, but don't expect immediate results cosmetically.

By doing these things you can prepare yourself for your breast surgery. For more information and assistance, talk with a medical clinic that offers breast surgeries, like Dalton Surgical Group.
