Platelet-rich plasma therapy and stem cell therapy are two different procedures that can be used to treat physical conditions and injuries. They are both regenerative medical practices that encourage growth and healing within the body.

Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) Injection Therapy

Whole blood contains plasma. Plasma is made up of water and proteins. Plasma supports the movement of red blood cells, white blood cells, and platelets. Platelets play a large role in the healing process. With a platelet-rich plasma retrieval procedure, several vials of blood are collected via a syringe.

The blood is added to a centrifuge device. This device concentrates the blood and separates the platelets from the other components that make up the blood. The platelets are then injected into the body. The location where the injection will be conducted may be in reference to a current injury or physical imperfection.

PRP treatments stimulate the growth of new, healthy cells. A treatment can promote healing or rejuvenate skin or hair follicles. Targeted treatments may require the use of an ultrasound imaging device. As a platelet injection is underway, a medical technician can use an ultrasound wand to help them pinpoint where the platelets will be deposited. Follow-up appointments will determine if additional injections will be needed. Healing a body part that is being treated will be assessed during a follow-up appointment with a medical practitioner.

Stem Cell Injection Therapy

Stem cells are located in fat deposits and bone marrow. Each person has a set number of stem cells in their body. Collecting stem cells requires a more targeted approach than collecting platelets. A doctor may need to make an incision or inject a needle in the area where stem cells will be retrieved from. This process is much more tedious than drawing blood and separating its components.

Stem cells can be used as replacements for a variety of specialized cells that are naturally found in the body. Stem cells are injected into a problematic part of the body that is being treated. The cells will trigger a healing response and are capable of generating new tissue.

Orthopedic and muscular injuries, skin imperfections, and hair loss can be treated with stem cell therapy. Stem cell therapy will not require an overnight stay in a hospital. The collection of cells and the injection of them into another part of the body can be conducted in an office setting. Contact a PRP  injection clinic to learn more.
